The four paintings titled after Gounod's opera, Faust, were conceived as the first of a series of 12 paintings inspired by the ballet music and Concert Waltz. Only the first four parts of the ballet were completed: Les Nubiennes, Adagio, Danse Antique, Variations de Cleopatre. Seven paintings visualize the ballet music and five paintings visualize the Concert Waltz. The seven variations of the Faust ballet were choreographed in the twentieth century by Balanchine (that the artist saw after he had done these paintings). He moved on to other things and may never get back to completing the images of this exciting music of Charles Gounod (1818-1893).

ABSTRACT RHYTHM PAINTINGS 2D Len Gerwick's abstract rhythm paintings are fine art that seek a specific goal which is a beautiful visual order seen in repeated and related forms. These fine art paintings are akin to music and architecture and also to the kinetic art of dance. Some of Len's 2D rhythm abstractions were inspired by music written for dance, such as four variations of Gounod's ballet music. Instead of the music interpreted for spatial and kinetic dance movement, Len's paintings transmute the sound into related and repeated color forms. Color is of major importance to Len's abstractions. These colorful paintings repeat in various forms of intensity, value and chromatics. Some of the 2D paintings are really a series of individual canvases. The arrangement itself of the canvases becomes an aspect of the overall rhythm. The four paintings of Gershwin's Drifting Along with the Tides can be arranged in any order. What is presented on this website is the artist's arrangement, but the viewer is invited to re-do this and is thereby part of the end result. This is also true of the six canvases that make up Tainted Love. The artist originally imagined the six canvases hung in a straight line but this arrangement need not be kept. Len creates these rhythm abstractions in his studio in Massachusetts. This art work is suitable for the business and corporate environment as well as the private home. LEN GERWICK PAINTINGS The artist Leonard Gerwick has used his skills in a most profound way, since the mid 1960's. Besides being a career puppeteer, he has pursued painting seriously and continues to show and sell his art throughout New England and Massachusetts. Any one who enjoys his creations can buy his paintings at the studio located in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The customer is able to buy these paintings directly from the studio, or through email and telephone conversations. Lenny believes it is important to interact with a customer in a personal way and is willing to show his work at any time a request is made. Abstract Rhythm Art Paintings to buy for SALE New England, MA CT NH VT RI NY NJ US The inspiration of this painting was Miff Mole & His Little Molers 'You Made Me Love You' recorded Sept. 24, 1929. The painting is conceived in a combination of shapes of 3, 5, and 8. There are 5 canvases and 8 black wooden plugs that hold the canvases together (part of the wooden structure behind). The upper canvas establishes the combinatin of 3, 5 and 8 and the first group on the left is repeated on the right. The 3 canvases in the center tier continue repetitions of shapes of 3, 5 and 8. The lower canvas repeats the combination of 8 shapes 3 times and of works as a base line. I wanted the overall impression of the painting to be all over and almost flying apart like the music which inspired it.
